Mandala of the Self
Summer Retreat

A weekend of regeneration, healing and growth

June 27th & 28th 2026

The heart of the retreat

A mandala is the psychological expression of the totality of the self’ Carl Jung 1981

Mandala’s have their origins in India dating from the 1st century or earlier. They are used in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Shinto and Tibetan Buddhism and eastern art forms.Mandala is the Sanskrit word for ‘circle’ and they have been used to represent the universe, the cosmic order and as a path to enlightenment.

In psychotherapy we think about the circle as a symbol of containment. By using the image of the mandala we can support out personal growth and awareness.

The weekend will be a rich mixture of exploration, regeneration, creativity and connecting with nature. With possibilities to walk in the wonderful Devon lanes or go for a swim in the nearby cove.

During the weekend we will be with our own personal relationship with the image of the mandala by using art materials, sandplay and found materials from the natural world.

We will explore our own unique relationship with the mandala. There will be teaching, an opportunity to walk the labyrinth, music and poetry. The setting is Ruth’s wonderful garden and land where you can immerse yourself in nature:  forest bathing in the walnut grove, the orchard or the birch plantations or simply choose a single tree to experience your connection. You may prefer to meditate beside the pond and observe the steady stream of life which it supports or sit at the top of the top of the orchard with views down the valley and towards Dartmoor.

We will meet for meditation in the bell tent and use the yurt and cabin throughout the day. Plenty of shelter will be provided in the event of weather. The labyrinth is located on Ruth and Peters land just across the road. We are a 15 minute walk to the small cove at  Maidencombe and a 10 minute walk to the coast path where you can experience spectacular views on a clear day to Portland Bill.

Who is this suitable for?

Anyone who is interested in an exploration of themselves through creativity and connecting with nature. CPD certificates will be provided for those who require them.

The location

The weekend will take place at White Cottage my home and sanctuary which I share with Peter and two elderly dogs (they don’t roam outside unattended) and the chucks. We have 3 acres of land by the house which includes a small walnut grove, a mixed orchard and a vegetable garden and lower beds and a newly created pond. Across the road we have another field where the labyrinth has been created. It is a deeply nurturing space held by trees and open spaces which attracts a wide variety of birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Our land slopes and enjoys views towards Dartmoor from the top of the orchard (where there are places to sit) and the Bell Tent will be located and secluded spaces closer to the house.

I have a cabin in the garden which has a sandplay collection. Our place is wild and verdant and abundant. With the combination of warm weather and rain the growth is extraordinary this year.

We will use the cabin, a bell tent and other shelters as well as the outdoor space. The house kitchen will be available at all times for drinks, food etc. The toilet is also within the house.

Accessibility

We will be based largely outside ranging over the land, being comfortable with this is important. If you are uncertain please check.

Arriving

The nearest train stations are Teignmouth and Newton Abbot. For Teignmouth you need to change at Exeter (the trains are frequent). Teignmouth is preferable if you are staying very local to us.

Nearest airports: Exeter, Bristol and Newquay.

There is a bus which runs between Teignmouth and Torquay and it is a short walk down the road to us.

We would be happy to help with collecting

What you might need to bring

If you have favourite art materials please feel free to bring them. A plentiful variety of materials will be provided.

Wear shoes appropriate to being outside. Bring clothes for all weather conditions and if you want to swim – your swimming things too.

We will largely be outside – so be prepared.

Bring a torch if you are planning to be around on the Saturday evening.

Bring what makes you feel comfortable.

Dietary Options

All the food offered will be vegetarian. Please let me know if you are vegan or have other dietary requirements.

£295 for the weekend which includes breakfast, lunch, tea, coffee etc.

Accommodation

There will be space to camp or bring your van in the field across the road. The site is off grid, with a basic compost toilet and running water. There is an outdoor washing up area.

We also have two caravans which could be used – both would provide a comfortable place to sleep and wake surrounded by nature.

Our land is adjacent to Orchard Organic Farm:

Hens Dens which offers glamping, camping and van space https://orchardorganicfarm.co.uk/the-hens-dens/

There is plenty of accommodation available in the locality – we are very close to Teignmouth and Shaldon.

Please enquire if you need help.
